When I visited London for the first time, I made a conscious decision to stay in a smaller, independently owned hotel. The experience changed how I plan my travels forever. Big name hotels have their place, but small properties offer unique advantages that make them ideal bases for exploring new destinations. Here’s why you should consider them for your next trip.
I found the perfect example when searching for accommodations. The Beckham Hotel Collection offers carefully restored buildings with 23 uniquely designed rooms around the Leadenhall Market area of central London. A friend who had stayed there recommended it, saying it felt more like a boutique friends-and-family-style hotel than a large chain property, which is exactly what I was looking for. It ended up being the perfect choice, as everything in and around Lendonhall Market in central London was easily walkable: fine dining, shopping within Charles Dicken’s old stomping ground, and the whole city as our oyster. At Beckham Hotel Collection, you’re right in the heart of so much history without leaving their picturesque block.
The real magic of staying at a well-run small hotel is that they can offer far more personal service than larger properties where they need to processes everything out as efficiently as possible because of their sheer size. Just look at any large-chain operation; staff there do very specialized jobs to keep so many people happy with zero mistakes on their watch. Guests check in and out at front desks with activities scheduled through concierge while housekeeping manages cleaning and room service separately.
Small hotels remember families traveling with kids
During my stay at the Beckham Hotel Collection, I saw firsthand how smaller operations adapt quickly to accommodate various family needs during peak season times without sacrificing the quality of service, especially good things like kid-friendly menus or games and toys available upon request. Their flexibility showed through when we asked if they could provide an extra cot for our toddler under 60 pounds without risking tripping hazards by adding too much furniture to our modest room (which looked more like a cozy pod than just another hotel holdover) They charge no fee for young children 10 years or younger sleeping in existing beds while waiving fees charged by larger chains simply because someone takes up an overbooked bed’s square footage quota.
When your child gets hungry between feedings during those long car rides from airport terminals or waiting for luggage to be disinfected before re-entering country lines (which take hours now), smaller operations help avoid buying prepackaged road snacks from convenience stores along rushed routes because those items cost significantly more than prepared foods you would’ve bought otherwise had kids occupied themselves differently elsewhere – unlike large operators catering on demand via insulated container requests requiring additional labor fees per item unpacked beyond standard inventory expectations requiring pickup orders beyond standard checkout requirements.
